It looks like an eternity since SlotZ Racer initially debuted at the App Store. Back then, its attention to detail coupled with a (eventually added) vast track editor and multiple modes made it not just a perfect slot car title but additionally a fun racer. Fast-forward to today and SlotZ Racer 2 HD [Free] looks to bring back the joy that its predecessor (now now not at the App Store) once touted. While SlotZ Racer 2 is a bit of disappointing so far as new things it brings to the series, the core gameplay returns untouched, bringing newcomers an enjoyable experience. If you never had the potential of trying out the original, SlotZ Racer 2′s gameplay relies at the incredibly simple premise of its physical namesake. Players take part in a lot of races that happen on slot tracks. As you could expect, controls are limited to easily acceleration, with an easy tap-and-hold controlling speed. Thus, the important thing to success is to time your vehicle’s acceleration by speeding up on straightaways and managing speed and drifting on turns. It sounds simple, but SlotZ plays fast enough and has enough variety in its tracks to be enjoyable. As far as game modes are concerned, SlotZ 2 features the usual modes present in most racers. While the bulk will persist with championship mode (points-based racing tourneys), there’s also single race, time trial, and multiplayer modes. In addition, a tight car editor is accessible for purchase and allows players to make use of the points earned in championship mode so as to add additional stats for your vehicles. While SlotZ Racer 2 HD doesn’t feature weapon combat and the real racing doesn’t offer much in relation to variety, one area that the sport does do an excellent job in is its track editor. SlotZ 2 includes a pretty in-depth track editor, being able to clone and edit existing tracks and allows players to edit everything from track length and direction to scenery to even the backdrop setting. For players that familiarize yourself with the editor, SlotZ 2 has the power to maintain you engaged with track creation for quite awhile. My only complaint is that it will take a while to truly familiarize yourself with the editor because it may also be unintuitive at times. For a game that attaches the ‘HD’ tag to its name, SlotZ Racer 2 really doesn’t appear to do too well within the visuals department. While actual vehicle models do look crisper, making the most of retina-enhancement that weren’t within the original, track models and environments look noticeably blurry and out-of-place especially compared to the higher-res assets. This inconsistency extends to even the menu system which also looks blurry. In addition, the track editor also looks just a little messy, with occasional graphical artifacts and buttons which are hard to discern. Thankfully the game’s framerate runs at a particularly fast clip that’s a very powerful aspect of a racer’s visual system. The biggest issue with SlotZ Racer 2 HD is the sensation that we have seen this all before. Rather than the expanded offerings when it comes to maps and cars (in addition to the corresponding extras within the track editor), SlotZ Racer 2 doesn’t offer anything new to the experience. That is not to mention what it offers is necessarily bad, but it’s more disappointing than anything else.Even though SlotZ Racer 2 HD can also be considered more of the same, it’s still an enjoyable virtual slot car racer. For those who did not have the pleasure of playing the unique SlotZ Racer, this sequel is easily worth testing. For others already familiar to the scene, SlotZ Racer 2 won’t offer enough new features to warrant investment. Fortunately, considering SlotZ Racer 2 HD is obtainable for free, you’ll be able to no less than test it out before creating a decision.TouchArcade Rating:
